lightly: american sijo of Dan Schwerin

“With Bishop Schwerin’s poetry, don’t worry the form or where to start — just jump in, and listen. You will learn to “Trust the morning glory,” see where “The meadow comes in without bishops,” and hear how “A dirt road has many stories.” Yes, this is a Gloppy Primer where you can “rip it out measure, and saw it again.” This is a place where you can “Have a brat” and learn to “candle through winter.”
— CX Dillhunt, Editor, Hummingbird: Magazine of the Short Poem

“Concrete, transcendent, liminal, humble, love — these are the words that arise in the mind as one reads Dan Schwerin’s sijo collection, lightly. This poetic account of an internal and external journey courageously holds the antinomies of life in an open palm of wonder and compassion. The poles of duality interpenetrate and still remain themselves, and all is told with an unflinching lightness. This book is a true guide to living without choosing a side, and doing so with love.”
— David McKee

High beams visit
a short night
for dreams of fleeing
down my beanstalk.
Its tapping
on the window
calls me forward
as the moon.
A rabbit darts
under the fence,
waking my
inner Merton.

A Splash My pebble’s fall down the well still obeys its earthward path. A stone surrenders to God as simply as it can. Even before the sound, I’ve made a splash in the heart of God.
